Drawing the room, walls, windows and doors

Use Room mode to draw walls, start from a ready-made shape, trace a floor plan, and place windows and doorways.

This is for anyone who designs in the studio: homeowners on the homeowner designer, and shops and designers with a Space account. (If a shop invited you to look at a kitchen, you can't change it.)

Across the top of the studio are four modes: Cabinets, Room, Finishes and Walk. Press Room. The tools appear on the shelf at the bottom.

Start from a shape

Under Start from, choose L-shape, U-shape, Galley or Empty room. This replaces what's on screen. Space asks first: press Replace it to go ahead or Keep what I have to cancel. Undo brings the old layout back.

Draw your own walls

Click a wall to change its Length, Height and thickness, or press Remove wall. Changing the length moves the far end and any wall joined to it.

Windows and doorways

Drag a window or doorway from Openings onto a wall. Click it to type its width, sill height and head height (sizes are the rough opening). Type sizes like 36, 36-1/2 or 6'8". Remove takes it out.

Trace a floor plan

Press Floor plan to work from a drawing you already have.

  1. Choose a picture or PDF. A phone photo of a sketch works; hold the phone square over it.
  2. Set the scale: press Measure a line, drag along a wall or dimension you know, type its length and press Set.
  3. Line it up with Move it and the turn buttons. See-through fades the drawing.
  4. Trace with Draw walls or Draw a room, then drop windows and doors where the drawing shows them.
  5. Then either Fill with cabinets (Space puts in a sink under the window, dishwasher, range and hood, fridge, corners, uppers, and an island if there's room) or Keep my layout to place cabinets yourself.
  6. Press Done to close the panel.
